2015 - November - Mythos - Camps Bay

2015 November 24

A week ago on reading a restaurant review, my eyes fell on ‘whitebait’.  I was hooked!  Years ago I’ve had whitebait in the Cape Harbour at Panama Jacks.  They were small, crispy and golden.
But then they remove it from the menu.  Mythos, Montecasino (where Cocobongo used to be) is Greek and has Whitebait.  Although, technically it’s more the size of sardines.  But it was crispy, golden and just utterly delicious!

If you are in Cape Town or Joburg and haven’t used an Uber car yet ... do so.  No more hiring a car, having to find parking, going to a party and feel you can’t drink cause you’ve still got to drive ...  It’s cheaper than renting a car.  The cars are new or almost new, drivers are rated on performance and you only wait a few minutes for a pick-up.

A weekend in the bush is always fantastic.  Even more so when our friends were on a game drive ... Hein and I stayed at the house and made a big fire.  All of a sudden I heard these cracking noises ... loud and close.  Elephants a mere 30 – 40 metres away from us!  A few big ones and 3 ‘teenagers’.  They were peacefully munching on the leaves.  What a sight.

Marmite snacks ... I don’t even like Marmite ... prefer Bovril.  But my friend Ina gave me some Marmite crisps and wow, they were amazing!!!  I also found Marmite rice cakes ... so so.  Marmite breadsticks are really amazing too!!!!  I found mine at Hillfox Food Lover’s Market.

Do you complain about bad service in a restaurant?  Last week we visited Vicky Christinas on the Promenade Camps Bay.  It started out fantastic.

They have pressed ceilings, pictures of Hollywood actresses with cleavages and a few ‘six packs’ and the Manager was really good.  The sea view and sunset was spectacular!  Hein ordered a Boston Lager beer and really liked it.  Ordering the second beer ... sorry, but the keg is empty.  It can only be reconnected the next day.  Our friend Lana recommended the ribs.  She actually ordered 2 main portions (one for a take-away) and we ordered a starter plate of ribs.  After 20 minutes of ordering the ribs, the waiter came back ... sorry but we’re out of ribs.  (???!!!)  One of our tapas plates were baby potatoes with cheese and bacon.  The waiter told us .. sorry, we don’t have any baby potatoes.    Now this restaurant is very close to a Pick ‘n Pay.  But noooooooo .... they cannot do that!

So we paid for the drinks and walked down the street ... luckily the Greek restaurant Mezepoli had a table.  (https://www.mezepoli.co.za/)

Service was extremely good, the kitchen was well organised (our table was close to the kitchen) and the food ... smackingly good.  Especially the calamari tubes filled with feta cheese.

In my study there’s a smallish Mellerware Biltong King.  But we use it mostly to make ‘droëwors’.  I just take any boerewors (not pork or chicken), brush white vinegar all around the sausages and hang them.  It takes about 3 – 4 days.

Even ostrich sausage works well.

This weekend I soaked a packet of normal ‘boerewors’ overnight in red wine, thinking we’ll put it on the braai.
But there were already too much sausages, so I took it home.  And it’s now in our Biltong King.  So my study smells like red wine.  We’ll see what the end product looks like.

Till next year ... keep well.
