2017 - Christmas Day - Hennops Pride picnic

Christmas day …

25 December 2017
it was suggested we lunch at a restaurant, since everyone is tired and didn’t feel like slaving over food.  Hein and I adamantly said ‘no’.  There’s no way we wanted to pay R300 PLUS PER PERSON for average to even bad food, sitting in a stuffy place, bad service, etc.

Our suggestion was picnic at Hennops Pride, http://www.hennopspride.co.za/, between Johannesburg and Hartbeespoort, on the Hennops river.  Although it means some work involved … packing up gazebo’s, chairs, salads, etc – we knew it will be awesome.

Weather was perfect and at 7 am Hein and I parked at the entrance to Hennops Pride.  Already we were 4th in the queue to enter!  Entrance fee is R100/adult.  There’s quite a few lovely swimming pools, bathrooms and numerous picnic spots to choose from.  Our choice was right on the river, on soft grass between 2 braai places.  In no time our gazebo was up, Hein boiled water for coffee and we relaxed watching the quick-moving river, sipping our black bitter coffee.  Pure heaven!

About an hour later Hein’s eldest brother Deon and his partner Val joined us.  They had another gazebo and Hein started the wood fire … breakfast was needed.  Boerewors of course.

By now quite a few people have arrived … but it never was ‘crowded’.  When Hein’s youngest brother Hugo and their dad arrived, Val made us all toasted sandwiches.  It was so good.

Val and I went for a swim a few times, they walked around the area a bit (there’s a hang bridge, a small kiosk with ice creams, sodas and beer) and then we braaied again.

Everyone brought their own meats - fillet, pork belly, pork chops, pork riblets and chicken pieces. Val made potato salad, I made a C4 salad … corn, cheese (feta), cucumber and cherry tomatoes.  Beers, water and soda were chilled and all around the chatter of people, the laughter of kids and the smells of braaivleis lulled us into a most amazing relaxed state.  THIS is what Christmas day is about … after 5pm we started to pack up and head home.
